Buried in all the words uttered yesterday about the abrupt and surprising departure of yet another Obama administration Cabinet member, Republican Sen. Judd Gregg of New Hampshire, set to become Commerce secretary, was his own short revelation:

The former governor and House member would likely not be seeking a fourth Senate term next year.

There aren’t that many northeastern Republicans left anymore. Gregg’s own state has been trending Democratic. Gregg’s moves throw the Granite State’s politics into turmoil, and open the door for Democrats to capture that 60th seat that makes the Senate filibuster-proof to the minority Democrats.

Send Senator Gregg your encouragement to run again in 2010. (Click to contact.) If there isn’t another conservative who can run competitively, we can’t afford to cede that position. Ask him to speak out against Obama’s attempt to grab control of the Census, which is the responsibility of the Commerce Department Gregg just quit. He is perfectly positioned to help lead the fight against this blatant wrongdoing by the Obama administration.

I think the GOP may have sent Gregg a message that if he stayed in the job, he’d get iced out of any lobbyist gigs after he left the Obama administration. That, and the fact that it is clearly WAR on Pelosi, Reid, Obama and their soldiers, and Gregg’s “bi-partisan” symbolism did not square with the battle.
