While Congress Distracts You With AIG, Mandatory Civil Service Vote Could Come At Any Time

UPDATE: House has just begun action on H R 1388. C-Span is covering live. Rep. Virginia Foxx (R-NC) is battling hard to keep them from ramming it through today. GET TO CONTACTING!
We’ve talked about the Obama administration’s “look over there” strategies, and AIG is serving as a fabulous distraction from what could be coming at any time now- the vote on House Resolution 1388…Obama’s mandatory civil service legislation. They’re calling it the “Give Act.”
The bill is out of committee, and is NOW on the House floor. Make no mistake, this new “draft” is aimed at people from 18-64. It is billed as “voluntary service”, but the bill allows legislators the leeway to explore MANDATORY service, which is what Obama and Rahmbo have made quite clear is their end-game on this issue. Trust me, if your kid wants a Pell Grant, they’ll be in the Obama Youth. Unemployed? Here’s your uniform. On and on, lots of carrots and sticks are up in this mess.
True to the administration’s playbook, they are not wasting the “crisis” of AIG. Hopefully it will give us enough time to Do The Drill and contact (vigorously) your Reps. Put in your zip code to find your Rep’s contact info.
Remember this?
And this?
Don’t let all of the “volunteer” talk fool you. Here’s a nugget from the proposed legislation:
(6) Whether a workable, fair, and reasonable mandatory service requirement for all able people could be developed, and how such a requirement could be implemented in a manner that would strengthen the social fabric of the Nation and overcome civic challenges by bringing together people from diverse economic, ethnic, and educational backgrounds.
We contribute our time and money under no government coercion on a scale the rest of the world doesn’t emulate and probably can’t imagine,” said Luke Sheahan, contributing editor for the Family Security Foundation. “The idea that government should order its people to perform acts of charity is contrary to the idea of charity and it removes the responsibility for charity from the people to the government, destroying private initiative.”
Here’s the House Bill 1388 and Senate 277.
