The New FDA- Broad Powers Over All Farmers: Big, Small, Backyard
Email This Post
Food Safety. Never let a good peanut-butter scare go to waste. So, in the name of “keeping us safe”, Democrats in the House and Senate have created similar proposed legislation that would essentially eliminate smaller farmers and organic farms. The House Bill, H.R. 875, creates an entirely new, giant bureaucracy…the New FDA. It would strip all of the food safety powers currently held by the FDA, and give them to the New FDA, along with an enormous amount of new regulation. Of course, it was ghost-written by Monsanto.
From data tracking devices and programs, to forced-use of chemicals and drugs in livestock (and SO much more that many farmers can’t afford), H.R. 875 is so broadly written that it technically could cover your own backyard garden. The Senate version, S 425 is a tad bit tamer- it keeps the FDA as it is, but gives it many more regulations to use in the name of “food safety.”
Obama’s new appointee to head the FDA, Margaret Hamburg, is leading the charge for this increase in government control and size. Hamburg is a former New York health inspector. Look for the mainstream media to get behind these efforts in a big way, by pushing the crap as a solution to the perceived inadequacy of food safety oversight.
The push is coming hard and fast, so You Know The Drill. Click the link to easily bombard your Representatives in Congress via email and phone calls. Send your opposition to Pelosi and the sponsors of the bills (below). This cannot happen to our farmers…or you can kiss your favorite produce stand goodbye.

Frankenfoods: The World According To Monsanto | Right Soup
May 13th, 2009 at 4:40 pm[...] H.R. 875 is barreling through Congress, and one of the chief beneficiaries of the sweeping new food regulations it creates will be agri-giant Monsanto. The bill is said to have been ghost-written by the company, and Americans are largely unaware of this looming power grab by it and the Obama administration. The bill would likely bankrupt small farmers, and organic farmers could be put out of business by the “best scientific practices” rules it contains. The enormous new agency created by the bill will determine what those practices are, and they could be pesticide and antibiotic use in the name of “safety.” The bill’s language is so broad, it will give authority over everything involved in “food” to the new Food Safety Agency. Technically, even your home garden is included. [...]

If anyone thinks that the current system of food safety is working, then you have rocks in your head. If Monsanto helped write the bill, it must have been on the GOP side. Our food is certainly not safe for consumption. Something needs to be done. Hey, how about a tax cut to make our food more safe? That seems to be the only answer the conservatives have.
