The Farm (Monsanto) Bill HR 2749- “Food Safety” Up For Vote Tomorrow
Email This Post
Right Soup alerted you a few months ago to the “Farm Food Safety” Act, which has now morphed into HR 2749…ghostwritten in large part by food monster/monopoly Monsanto. You know, the guys who make the genetically modified, “Round-Up Ready” seeds. And Agent Orange.
The food produced from genetically modified seeds hit the American dinner plate in 1996. Over the next nine years, multiple chronic illnesses in the US nearly doubled — from 7% to 13%. Allergy-related emergency room visits doubled between 1997 and 2002 while food allergies, especially among children, skyrocketed. We also witnessed a dramatic rise in asthma, autism, obesity, diabetes, digestive disorders, and certain cancers.
Monsanto has a gazillion friends in high places, and an army of attorneys who sue farmers into extinction should any Monsanto seed accidentally grow on a farm who hasn’t paid royalties to the Goliath. This happens an awful lot…mother nature has a way of scattering seeds around via the wind, birds, etc. Here’s our look at Monsanto, and here’s some more good reading on the foxes now guarding our food supply.
This bill will essentially strip food-safety duties from the FDA, and create an equally large or larger bureaucracy to oversee all aspects of food in America…and it looks like it’s scheduled for a vote in the House TOMORROW.
This bill . . .
* authorizes warrantless searches of farms
* imposes a $500 tax (or “registration fee”) of all operators in all steps of the food production chain
* imposes civil penalties up to $20,000 per individual for each violation
* creates a dizzying food trace-back system, burdening farms and small businesses with reams of new paperwork
* empowers the Dept. of Health and Human Services to micro-manage the raising and harvesting of crops (you might have assumed that Congress would’ve handed the U.S. Dept of Agriculture this terrible power.)
* is so broadly written that it could be used to enforce measures against you and your backyard garden.
In essence, Congress wants to punish the innocent and protect the guilty. It is not small farms and businesses that were the sources of contaminated food scares, but rather the processing facilities of large corporations. Yet this bill will only drive small farms out of business, which means reduced competition and higher prices in an already-bad economy.
You know the drill. You can easily call, email, fax and hand deliver letters to your Representatives by clicking here. We suggest you do all of the above. It’s not about safety, just like it’s not about health-care. It’s about POWER.
Don’t believe me? The person most directly responsible for GM foods and their many horrors; the individual who oversaw the FDA policy that facilitated their introduction- is a man named Michael Taylor. He had been Monsanto’s attorney before becoming policy chief at the FDA. Soon after, he became Monsanto’s vice president and chief lobbyist.
This month, Michael Taylor became the senior adviser to the commissioner of the FDA. He is now America’s “Food Safety Czar.”

I am not in agreement with passing HR 2749.
One company controlling the Nation’s food supply is not my idea of democracy… it is democrazy!
You ask us to trust a company, who I understand was the developer of Agent Orange and is the author of this bill HR 2749. It is not of the people, so let’s shoot it down totally.
