Sotomayor Hearings Begin This Morning

The hearings for Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor have begun in the Senate judiciary committee, and the liberal/conservative divide has begun. Sen. Dianne Feinstein, in her opening remarks, allowed that a woman on the court may have a different methodology/perspective and that this was OKAY. GOP Sen. Jeff Sessions countered that if he as a white male came before the court, he would expect the same treatment as any other American citizen…and that he was concerned that this would not be the case if Sotomayor was on the bench.
Some pundits wondered how long it would take before Sotomayor’s controversial comments on being a “wise Latina who would make a better decision than a white male” would arise. It took about 5 minutes.
One of the witnesses during the hearings will be Frank Ricci, lead plaintiff in the suit against the Connecticut fire department who discriminated against firefighters in a test for promotions. Sotomayor ruled against the firefighters who passed the test, and for the African Americans who failed. This decision was overruled about a month ago by the Supreme Court. Already, a movement to smear Frank has begun, and the gloves are off.

We’ve all heard her white male v. hispanic female sexist/racist comment. But this one chills me to the bone and isn’t nearly as talked about. This alone should disqualify her from being a judge anywhere, and should qualify her as someone who needs to be escorted from society…China style.
“I want to be perfectly clear about this next comment so that there is no mistaking my words to mean something other than what they plainly say: the time has come to end white male oppression by castrating every white male until they are no longer dominant in Western culture. That means forcible removal of their testicles. I realize the brutality of my comment, and I don’t know how to say it more clearly.”
