Barack Obama strutted out this morning with Joe Biden on his left and his nominee for filling David Souter’s empty robes on the Supreme Court, Sonia Sotomayor on his right. The cherry-picked audience, which included Reverend Al Sharpton, gave the catwalk thunderous applause. Something was off with Barry this morning, because during his teleprompted Sotomayor pitch- he made baseball jokes? Really? And revealed that Nancy Drew was one of Sonia’s heroes? Dude. Who’s running the TOTUS? Even the audience of cheerleaders was palpably uncomfortable. This was the announcement of a Supreme Court nomination for heavens sake, a life appointment to a position which affects everyone in the land. The appropriate gravitas was not what No Drama Obama delivered.

Sotomayor fought to get where she is, and Obama repeated her rags-to-riches story: she is the daughter of Puerto Rican immigrants and was raised in a Bronx housing project. She has dealt with diabetes since age 8 and lost her father at age 9, growing up under the care of her mother. Sotomayor supposedly became interested in law after watching the TV show “Perry Mason” and, according to Obama, Nancy Drew.

She later graduated from Princeton University and earned her law degree from Yale University. Sotomayor was appointed a federal district court judge in 1992 by President George H.W. Bush and then elevated to the 2nd Circuit Court of Appeals by President Bill Clinton. At that time, Republicans held up her confirmation, but she eventually passed the Senate 68-28.

Despite Sotomayor’s laudable long journey up out of poverty in the South Bronx, she is extremely liberal. Barry’s dished up a bunch of pretty words in his statement today, like “justices interpret rather than make the law.” Kumbayah. When will people stop buying Obama’s unicorns and rainbows?

The GOP needs to make some serious noise; we need to strongly encourage the Senate Judiciary Committee to shed light on Sotomayor’s core beliefs, and to vote her down because of her philosophies. It’s not comforting that Barry has potentially 70-75 votes in the Senate.

Her nomination is a major problem for conservatives, as Sotomayor would most likely be the farthest left of all the SCOTUS Justices, and has been quoted as saying that the Judiciary makes and should be making policy. No, no, no. The legislative assemblies are SUPPOSED to make policy. Justice, after all, is supposed to be blind. The New York Times is gushing that Sotomayor’s nomination is the first in 40 years to excite the left as she does. She’s considered to be the furthest left of all of Obama’s potential picks. Anything that excites the left this passionately is a call to action we can’t ignore.

Sotomayor’s confirmation needs to be handled appropriately; Senators need to stick to her record for determining her philosophies. They can’t beat her up in the process, her life story is too compelling. She’s a shrewd pick for Obama. Senators need to beat up her ideals, and despite what the party line is, she is NOT a moderate.

Don’t stop pounding on the door of Congress. If every Republican withheld their support from Sotomayor, she would not slide in so easily. Sotomayor has said ” I would think that a wise Hispanic woman, in the richness of her experience, would make a better decision than a white male.” If this isn’t identity politics, I don’t know what is.
