Something Out Of Nothing: Sharpton ‘Outraged’ Over NYP Stimulus Cartoon

Publicity whore and trouble instigator Al Sharpton was at it again today. On Wednesday, the New York Post ran the above cartoon which features two cops, one having just shot dead the rabid chimpanzee stand-in and the other noting “They’ll have to find someone else to write the next stimulus bill.”

It’s obviously a reference to this week’s chimp mauling story and the infinite monkey theorem of putting enough monkeys in a room of typewriters and they’ll write you something eventually. Despite the obvious, plain faced joke here Al Sharpton is crying racism because apparently you can’t reference a chimp without implying Barack Obama is black, or whatever it is that Sharpton is claming to get attention this time:

“Here, you have someone using race-tinged cartoons to racially offend the president,” The Rev. Al Sharpton said.

Sharpton said it’s worse than Don Imus’ derogatory comments about the Rutgers women’s basketball team. The Post, Sharpton said, seems to play into the old stereotype of African Americans being monkeys.

“This inference is something that is divisive, something that is offensive and something that should not be quietly accepted,” Sharpton said.

My immediate reaction to the cartoon was that the stimulus bill, Porkulus, was so stupid that a monkey (or a chimp, in this case) could have written it. But Sharpton wants to make it about racism because apparently America is one big, non-stop racist country, oh except for having an African-American president.

The New York Post’s Col Allan, editor-in-chief, struck back today:

“The cartoon is a clear parody of a current news event, to wit the shooting of a violent chimpanzee in Connecticut. It broadly mocks Washington’s efforts to revive the economy. Again, Al Sharpton reveals himself as nothing more than a publicity opportunist.”

One last thought: Obama didn’t even write this bill, so if this claim of racism is correctly applied, doesn’t that mean the NYP is calling Pelosi & Reid a bunch of monkeys?

Annoying Update: NY’ers to boycott NYP:

“Just the fact that they put a monkey with gunshot wounds in his chest, it gives the idea of an assassination,” said Peter Aviles, 48, a building superintendent.

Yes, because the first thing that came to mind when I heard they had shot that chimp was, “oh no! someone is going to assassinate Dear Leader!” Give me a break.
