The political future of Sarah Palin is of great interest to many people these days. While it seems to me that most members of a losing presidential ticket don’t get a second chance these days I do still think Palin has a bright future on The Hill (and sure, I could be wrong about the first part).

After last week’s disappointing loss, Sarah Palin returned to her position as Governor of Alaska, but with Ted Stevens’ reelection still uncertain and his future in the Senate even more uncertain, questions have been raised if Palin will step in and fill his role if he is forced to leave. Her answer impressed and surprised me:

She told CNN’s Wolf Blitzer on Wednesday that she wants to serve her constituents the best she can. “At this point it is as governor,” she said.

“Now if something shifted dramatically and if it were, if it were acknowledged up there that I could be put to better use for my state in the U.S. Senate, I would certainly consider that but that would take a special election and everything else,” she said. “I am not one to appoint myself or a member of my family to take the place of any vacancy.”

Unlike Delaware’s Governor, Ruth Ann Minner, who is rumored to be considering appointing herself to Joe Biden’s emptied position in the Senate, Palin won’t be self-anointing herself to a publicly selected position. I knew I liked that lady!

Considering Palin’s high level of approval ratings in Alaska I think she’d be a shoe-in for the position with a special election over Stevens’ seat or with a challenge in the 2010 season. Do you think she should she wait or go for it sooner?
