Today, a top Obama aide announced the creation of a new interrogation unit which will be directly supervised by the White House. Deputy press secretary Bill Burton says the new unit won’t put the CIA out of the interrogation business, but would be comprised of an FBI official, a deputy director from somewhere in the government’s vast intelligence apparatus, and members from across agencies. Ostensibly, the unit is to interrogate “terrorism” suspects.

The new interrogation unit will be known by the acronym HIG. Holder (Eric)Interrogation Group?! He’s considering re-opening “mistreatment” cases against CIA employees, despite warnings that doing so would damage intelligence efforts in the future. No, the HIG acronym actually stands for High-Value Detainee Interrogation Group.

The Admin is launching the new interrogation unit on the same day the CIA Inspector General will be unveiling a report on Bush administration handling of suspects. Details were expected to show that “highly questionable” tactics were used. A federal judge has ordered the report made public today, in response to a Freedom of Information Act lawsuit filed by the ACLU.

No word on who will lead Obama’s new US-SS, nor what constitutes a “high value” terrorist.
