Obama Promises Compromise With Republicans On Spending Plan
Email This Post
While Congressional Democrats’ bid to provide economic stimulus has been replaced by massive goals of fruitless spending, President Obama promised top Republicans today that he was open to change on the bill.
“The American people expect action,” Obama said Tuesday as he shuttled between closed-door meetings with House and Senate Republicans on a trip to the Capitol that blended substance with political symbolism.
Republicans who attended the sessions said the president did not agree to any specific changes but did pledge to have his aides consider some that GOP lawmakers raised dealing with additional tax relief for businesses.
Prodded to budge on another point, Obama said that despite opposition, he will insist on giving relief to wage-earners who pay Social Security taxes but do not earn enough to owe income tax. His spokesman said the president reminded his critics that former President Reagan — conservative hero to many contemporary Republicans — supported the same concept while in the White House.
He’s right. Americans expect action, not the jobless wasting of their tax dollars and at least he’s agreed on one point of that with pressure for the removal of the magical economy-stimulating contraceptives.
The last issue noted, lower costs on those who do not pay income tax, is what set off Obama’s immature response of “I won” last week. So it’s difficult to be sure just how much lip service we’re getting with this message. Let’s hope our Congressional reps keep the pressure on.

When I think of the 700 billion dollars (and counting) that we are spending to bring “freedom to Iraq”, to rebuild Iraq’s roads, bridges, schools, to train and equip their police force and army, the get their electricity working and to bring clean water to their villages….I have to ask “Where is the Republican outraged when all that taxpayer money was being spent on a foreign country thousands of miles away (despite Iraq’s huge oil wealth)
Sure, there’s some spending programs that won’t do a whole lot to stimulate the economy in Obama’s package…but at least it’s money that’s being spent here in the US.
I’d rather see my tax dollars go to to putting sod on the mall in Washington DC or building a bridge in Minneapolis… rather than being wasted over in Iraq.
How do you explain to your children that we spent $700 billion in Iraq but have nothing to show for it but a shoe thrown in the presidents face.
Why didn’t the Republicans protest loudly about deficit spending and wasted tax dollars back then?
Is it because the money was going to Iraq and not to America??

I would never consider the liberation of 28,000,000 Iraqis as “nothing to show for it.” But maybe that’s just my value of human life and liberty. Liberals seem to place a lower worth there:

And as far as Republican outrage over wasted tax dollars, perhaps you’ve forgotten the GOP protest to the TARP.
