North Korea has now exploded 6 nuclear bombs in the past 3 days, in defiance of UN sanctions. The UN is now threatening more toothless, useless sanctions on crazed Kim Jong Il and his communist North Korea. The regime says it considers South Korea’s participation in a U.S.-led program to intercept North Korean ships, which are suspected of spreading weapons of mass destruction, a declaration of war against the North.

The communist North’s military said in a statement Wednesday that it will respond with “immediate, strong military measures” if the South actually stops and searches any North Korean ships under the Proliferation Security Initiative. The statement, carried by the North’s Korean Central News Agency, said North Korea no longer considers itself bound by the armistice in 1953 that ended the Korean War. It is back on.

South Korea announced its participation in the anti-proliferation program Tuesday, one day after the North conducted a nuclear test. North Korea has restarted a weapons-grade nuclear plant and fired the 6 short-range missiles in two days, news reports and South Korean officials said Wednesday, deepening the North’s standoff with world powers following its latest nuclear test. It’s underground test over the weekend registered 4.7 on the Richter scale.

Joining the PSI “is a natural obligation”, South Korean Foreign Minister Yu Myung-hwan told reporters. “It will help control North Korea’s development of dangerous material.” But North Korea’s response has been unequivocal.

“Any hostile act against our peaceful vessels, including search and seizure, will be considered an unpardonable infringement on our sovereignty,” a spokesman for the North’s army told KCNA. We will immediately respond with a powerful military strike.”

Russia is urging North Korea to stand down, even as reports come in of North Korean soldiers massing on the border with South Korea. North Korea has one of the largest armies in the world, including a huge air force.

President Obama spoke yesterday with Japanese Prime Minister Aso to review the situation following North Korea’s nuclear test. Obama reiterated that North Korea’s nuclear test was a clear violation of United Nations Security Council Resolutions and warranted a unified response from the international community. Michelle Malkin points out that this is the first real test of Obama’s mettle. He better get this one right.
