The Commercial Appeal in Memphis, Tennessee, has caused an outrage by posting a searchable post online containing the names of the 200,000-plus Tennesseans who have permits to carry handguns. The newspaper did this despite a clause in the government’s database that forbids publishing information from it. It put the information on its website’s “Data Center” months ago. Gun owners are pissed, because it makes them easier robbery targets for someone who wants a weapon, and, for the OBVIOUS privacy concerns.

The liberal press in Tennessee is howling about “prior restraint” regarding the anti-publishing clause, as the database is public record, at least right now. Tennessee legislators are responding with a bill to keep gun-permit records secret. The fact that the database is public record at all doesn’t sit too well with me- I’m not sure the whole world needs to know whether or not I carry a gun. Thanks, Banana Appeal!
