The news that New Hampshire Senator, Judd Gregg, would be nominated to be Obama’s secretary of commerce, following “pay to play” Governor Richardson’s withdrawal, immediately brought up concerns that Barry was attempting to undermine the fragile 41 GOP count in the Senate. Luckily for Republicans, Gregg indicated he wouldn’t take the bait without the appropriate arrangements:

Sen. Judd Gregg (R-N.H.) won’t accept a position as President Obama’s secretary of Commerce unless he is guaranteed his Senate seat remains in GOP hands, said two Republicans who know Gregg well.

Departing the Senate without one could give Democrats 60 members and a filibuster-proof majority.

“Gregg would never allow his seat to go to a Democrat, the only way he would allow it is if he died,” said a Republican close to Gregg. “He would consider it to be a breach of trust to people who elected it.”

The Republican requested anonymity to avoid the appearance of meddling in Gregg’s deliberations.

If Obama selects Gregg for his Cabinet and Gregg accepts, New Hampshire Gov. John Lynch, a Democrat, would have the power to appoint a successor.

But Republicans who know Gregg well say that Lynch must agree to select a Republican because Gregg, one of the most revered leaders in New Hampshire Republican politics, would not allow his seat to give Democrats filibuster-proof control of the Senate.

Good news again. This morning on C-SPAN I heard the VT Governor, Democrat John Lynch, has initially agreed to replace Gregg with another Republican should Gregg accept the cabinet nomination and be confirmed.

Officials expect the state’s Democratic governor, John Lynch, to fill Gregg’s Senate seat with another Republican. ‘In other words, whoever is appointed to replace him would caucus with Senate Republicans, so I think it would have no impact on the balance of power in the Senate,’ Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, the Senate’s minority leader, told ‘Face the Nation’ on CBS.’

Gregg, you’ve paid your taxes, right?

Update: Sources say Gregg has accepted the nomination.
