H.R. 875 is barreling through Congress, and one of the chief beneficiaries of the sweeping new food regulations it creates will be agri-giant Monsanto. The bill is said to have been ghost-written by the company, and Americans are largely unaware of this looming power grab by it and the Obama administration. The bill would likely bankrupt small farmers, and organic farmers could be put out of business by the “best scientific practices” rules it contains. The enormous new agency created by the bill will determine what those practices are, and they could be pesticide and antibiotic use in the name of “safety.” The bill’s language is so broad, it will give authority over everything involved in “food” to the new Food Safety Agency. Technically, even your home garden is included.

I think policing backyard gardens could prove difficult, so I’m more worried about the future of food and farmers in a world dominated by Monsanto’s genetically modified, patented seeds and the plants they produce. Europe at least knows if they’re eating GM foods; Monsanto’s huge lobby ensured that Americans don’t have this choice…disclosure is prohibited here. This new (January) documentary, The World According To Monsanto, is a must-watch for all- especially if you’re new to the issues it raises. I don’t side with the greenies on much, but this is a giant, frightening exception.
