I’m baffled by the thinking behind events like this: “The First Online March for Equality” being held on Facebook:

The First VIRTUAL Protest For LGBT Equality. The goal: Educate Americans about what marriage rights mean to LGBT: tax fairness, hospital visitation, medical decision-making, exemption from estate taxes, immigration, government benefits & more…

This past election is bringing out the worst in me, but I feel I must speak up. This election, in and of itself, was notably leftist. While John McCain had my full support, he is clearly more centrist than conservative. Barack Obama is, without a doubt, much more liberal. No matter which candidate won, this country was going to be stepping away from “conservative” ideals and values. On November 5th, 2008, when the polls were tallied and presented, I accepted that fact.

“Gay marriage” is something conservatives as a whole disagree with. I disagree with it because “marriage” is a religious term, and most if not all religions do not condone homosexual acts. I have absolutely no issue with gay couples getting tax breaks and insurance benefits and such. These are all civil matters that have nothing to do with religion. I would venture that a solution COULD be, for all civil matters, that no one gets married.

Instead, a couple (heterosexual or homosexual) could enter into a civil union. Uncle Sam would take care of everything needed through this union. Every marital benefit a couple now enjoys could be covered by this union. The term “marriage”, however, would remain for religious ceremonies. I was married in 2002, and under this new idea I would have both my marriage certificate, signed by my Pastor, and my Certificate of Union, signed by the local Justice of the Peace. I think this idea would solve a host of problems for many, but the far left and the far right would not likely support it.

Unfortunately, during the week of Obama’s inauguration, the “First Online March For Equality” is planned, with the goal of making everyone understand and accept gay marriage. That’s NOT going to happen. There is no chance this event will convert the masses into blessing gay marriage. It will just be a bunch of people, who already support gay marriage, getting together and causing mayhem. Obviously, under the 1st amendment, they have the right to do this.

My confusion, however, is this: the leftist ranks of this country won the election, they got their way, their desires are going to be fulfilled. The nation has it’s first black president coming into office. Obama will surely accomplish MANY liberal causes. So why in the world can’t the fanatics for THIS event at least wait until he is in office? Why do they have to take away from the ceremony…an historic event that will change this country forever? Why do these people, with their agendas and motives, have to distract attention from the very man they elected? It’s like they’re too impatient to even give him a chance.

It makes no sense to me why a group of people would vote a liberal leader into office, then detract from their day of celebration with an “event” like this. I think their actions clearly illustrate that there’s no way to please the entire country. No president ever will. Nonetheless, it’s a shame that when Obama will be formally taking the reins of this country, liberals don’t even respect him enough to honor that.
