Hillary Clinton has never been foreign policy driven. From her days of backseat driving the Clinton presidency she focused on her attempts for health care reform and failed miserably. Once out of the White House she moved to the most lenient state in America, New York, so she could become a Senator as easily and quickly as possible. Since then she’s continued to focus on domestic policies.

So why then is someone without any sizable foreign policy experience or interest being vetted and widely considered as the top pick for Barack Obama’s Secretary of State? What value could Hillary Clinton provide to the United States as its representative around the world? Other than star power I can’t think of anything.

Even more questionable is Clinton’s motivation. She’s admitted that her passion is homegrown, not overseas. If she takes this position it will be simply out of self-glorification and resuming padding rather than “country first.”

One last thing. Hillary still has 8 million dollars in campaign debt hanging over her head. Should she take this position her ability to find a quick donor will be greatly restricted. I’d watch for a “signing bonus” if this move comes. Let’s hope not.
