5 weeks ago Barack Obama told America that we needed Porkulus so companies could hire again. In fact, if it was passed, Obama promised quite explicitly, that construction company Caterpillar Inc. would rehire some of those 22,000 people they had to lay off:

“If Congress passes our plan, this company will be able to rehire some of the folks who were just laid off.”

Of course Caterpillar’s CEO Jim Owens had to step in and remind Obama that Catepillar would have to make that call and it didn’t look likely:

After the president left the event, Owens said the exact opposite.

Asked if the stimulus package would be able to stop the 22,000 layoffs or not, Owens said, “I think realistically no. The truth is we’re going to have more layoffs before we start hiring again”

“It is going to take some time before that stimulus bill” means re-hiring, he said.

But guess what, Porkulus passed and Catepillar is still announcing more job cuts today. I’m no math major, but I’m pretty sure more layoffs does not equal more hiring at Catepillar Inc. like Obama promised us. What other wild promises will fall flat?
